Description

Boas Vides 2019 is a red wine crafted by Antonio Míguez Amil in the Ribeiro region of Galicia. This wine stands out for its freshness and finesse—the result of a cooler harvest compared to 2018. In its production, Antonio utilizes indigenous grape varieties such as Carabuñeira (related to Touriga Nacional), Sousón, Brancellao, Espadeiro, and Garnacha, sourced from vineyards located on the historic slopes of the Avia Valley.

The winemaking process involves spontaneous fermentation, with each variety vinified separately to highlight its distinct characteristics. Subsequently, the wine matures for at least 6 months in seasoned (older) barrels, before resting in stainless steel tanks and, finally, in the bottle.

On the nose, it evokes a Portuguese style, offering an expressive concentration of red fruits, bay leaf, pine, and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is dynamic and silky, possessing an enviable freshness. While highly drinkable now, it is worth setting aside a few extra bottles, as its aging potential is remarkable.

This wine reflects Antonio’s philosophy of reviving the historic red wines of Ribeiro, while respecting the identity of the ancient grape varieties and the region's unique *terroir*.

Additional information

Grape Harvest

Nine treatments were applied, based on extracts of garlic, willow, and cinnamon, as well as Bordeaux mixture, phosphorus and potassium, wettable sulfur, and lime sulfur. In retrospect, a dusting sulfur treatment was missed—given the powdery mildew pressure—and the lime sulfur dosage should have been increased.

Production process

Filtered by natural decantation

Maturation

6 months in 225-liter second-use French oak barrels. 1 year in a 1,000-liter steel tank. 1 year in 0.75-liter bottles.

Work on the farm

Traditionally, the work is done by hand. Pruning is carried out using the Guyot system. Treatments consist solely of natural products—typical of permaculture and organic farming—in accordance with the philosophical principles of Steiner. No pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic products are used in the vineyard.

The weather

Spring was characterized by dry, sunny weather and temperatures that were high for the season—with the occasional thunderstorm in May—which accelerated the vine's growth cycle. Budbreak was uneven; it began in May and continued until mid-June, when the weather shifted: temperatures dropped and rain arrived—rain that was cold for that time of year. July and August were extremely dry and quite mild; in fact, temperatures were lower than the average for recent years. In mid-September, some light rain fell, which helped complete the ripening cycle and balance the pH and acidity. In short, it was a year free of major surprises regarding pests, though rot (Black Rot) once again became an issue, affecting the *Viña do Mesón* vineyard, where the *Caiño Longo* variety suffered a very late attack on August 1st.

Observations

The *pintor* (veraison) began during the week of July 20th and extended until August 20th; the process was very slow due to a severe summer drought. The weather remained mild, with some days even seeing low temperatures. Ultimately, the harvest turned out very well; the vines maintained a well-balanced yield and were in optimal sanitary condition, suitable for producing quality wine.
