Description

This red wine follows the style of the 2017 vintage, composed of 40% Carabuñeira, with the remainder consisting of traditional grape varieties: Sousón, Brancellao, Espadeiro, and Garnacha. The origin of the grapes and the meticulous winemaking process uphold a philosophy of respect for the land and for indigenous varieties.

In 2018, more consistent weather conditions allowed for a gradual and balanced ripening process. A 14-month maturation period in barrels, followed by a period of rest, has refined this complex wine, resulting in a fresher and more elegant profile.

Boas Vides 2018 displays an Atlantic character, featuring a pure expression of fruit, a firm structure, and a long finish. It is an honest red wine with a distinct identity of its own.

Additional information

Grape Harvest

Following the devastation caused by downy mildew and black rot on July 2nd and 3rd, the summer turned out dry and hot, which delayed the grape harvest until September 28th–30th; the harvest was carried out by hand by friends and relatives.

Production process

Os rendementos foron moi baixos porén moi maduros e con notabel acidez. Botou a ferver de xeito espontaneo en depósitos de 1.000 litros, dándolle galla 3 veces ao día. Empregouse unha prensa vertical tradicional, de gaiola.

Maturation

3 months in steel tanks. In February 2019, it was transferred to 300- and 600-liter French oak barrels (third-use). In December 2019, it was moved to a steel tank. In June 2020, it was bottled on a "Fruit Day" and stored in a dedicated section of the winery.

Work on the farm

Traditionally, the work is done by hand, using pruning shears and a pole. Only natural products—consistent with permaculture and organic farming—are used, following the philosophical principles of Steiner. No pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic products have been used in the vineyards.

The weather

Spring was marked by rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by high temperatures. The thunderstorms on June 29th and 30th—occurring with temperatures between 25°C and 30°C and a complete absence of wind—triggered a severe outbreak of downy mildew and black rot, which destroyed 70% of the harvest. The summer of 2018 was hot and very dry, extending until mid-October. Daytime temperatures ranged from 30°C to 38°C, while nighttime temperatures were between 15°C and 18°C, with a total lack of humidity. Nine treatments were applied, consisting of extracts of garlic, willow, and cinnamon, as well as Bordeaux mixture, phosphorus, potassium, and powdered sulfur.

Observations

Around Saint Peter's Day (June 29th), there were heavy thunderstorms with abundant rainfall that affected the vineyards of San Clodio, San Lourenzo, and Francelos; there, almost the entire harvest of Caiño Longo and part of the Sousón crop were lost due to mildew. It was a very long and dry summer.
